Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Taos Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

At Taos Recovery Center, we realize that no two people and no two roads to recovery are the same. Because everybody has their own needs when it comes to addiction recovery, we provide a number of different treatment methods and work with our patients to find which is right for them. One of the most common and effective methods that we employ is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (or CBT).

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - What It Is and How It Works

CBT is a form of psychological treatment with a focus on changing problematic thought and behavioral patterns. It is rooted in the philosophy that psychological problems are based on unhelpful ways of thinking and learned patterns of destructive behavior. By using different strategies to promote healthy thought patterns, CBT has proven to be effective in helping patients replace bad habits with good ones. It has been shown to help a wide range of behavioral problems, including (but not limited to):

  • Depression
  • Eating disorders
  • Anxiety
  • Substance abuse addiction
  • Mental illness

Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Help Our Patients

CBT plays an integral role in our approach to addiction recovery. All changes in behavior, such as overcoming addiction, require a resolute change of mind. Every action or habit is the product of a preceding thought, so to change an action, one must change his or her thoughts. CBT helps patients change their thought patterns, and that is why we use it to help them overcome their addictions.

We integrate CBT in into the recovery process in a variety of settings:

  • Individual therapy: Our therapists use CBT to help our patients change their thought and behavioral patterns in their private therapy sessions. During these sessions, the patients are able to discuss their personal issues and get professional help with discovering the roots and causes of those issues.
  • Group therapy: During group therapy, our patients are able to see how their peers react in similar situations and are able to view their problems from a more objective perspective. They work together to find effective ways to apply CBT to help with their common struggles. The issues discussed during group therapy are often more general and less personal, but they still are effective in providing knowledge and support to addicts.
  • Family therapy: During our family therapy sessions, the patients and their families work with a therapist to discuss their emotions and thoughts. They help the addict see how their actions affect others and give them the support that is vital in the recovery process. They also discuss ways in which the addict can use CBT to change their behavior and how those changes will benefit everybody.

Benefits of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

More therapists, counselors and mental health specialists are recognizing the value of applying CBT to help people positively change their behavior. It has been shown to help people who are struggling with a variety of problems make lasting progress. Here are some of the positive effects that we at Taos Recovery Center have seen CBT has had on our patients:

  • Teaches skills that reduce the risk of relapse
  • Increases self-awareness
  • Helps patients learn skills that will help them manage personal relationships
  • Provides effective treatment without requiring medication

Reviews & Testimonials

See what people are saying about us.

Because SMR was founded by the parents of a young man in recovery it works with the whole family to achieve long term sobriety. The communication with parents truly sets SMR apart from other rehab homes.

Linda Brown

After several stints in rehab facilities all over the country, Shadow Mountain Recovery is the only place my son got the kind of help he needed to begin the process of self motivation toward permanent sobriety. The work they did seems to have set him on the road to self discovery. His mom and I thank you with all sincerity!
