A Day in the Life at Taos

Clients begin their day on the mountain with Morning Reflection group. Part of the life skills infusion component of our program is punctuality and regularity, and this early morning group provides the opportunity for staff to encourage this. Clients are expected to arrive dressed, showered and on time to this first group, and if this consistently does not happen, staff and peers are able to express a concern about it during weekly community group. Morning reflection is led by a Senior Staff member, and consists of reading from the “just for Today” meditation book and then discussing the reading. This group is ended with client’s setting a personal intention for the day ahead.

Following breakfast is a 90-minute interpersonal process group, led by one of 3 licensed clinicians on the mountain. This group is geared by the clinician to the weekly theme, but is allowed to go where the clients need to go on that day. Process group is more about relationships, vulnerability, and healthy expression than education.

After process group is a 90-minute didactic group, which is also led by a licensed clinical staff member. Didactic is mostly psychoeducational, but allows space for clients to ask questions and explore issues which may be pertinent to the milieu on that day. Didactic topics flow with the weekly theme of the program, and utilize several different modalities: REBT, CBT, etc.

After lunchtime there are two 60-minute group sessions, led by licensed staff and leading into fitness group then dinner. These sessions differ on a daily basis, but include men’s recovery sessions, mindfulness/yoga, art therapy, denial management and relapse prevention.

Every evening the clients participate in a mentor-led 12 step meeting, either in town or on campus. Mentors also lead 3 12-step based groups per week in the evenings.

Each night on the mountain concludes with a 60 minute “10th step reflection” group. This group is mentor-led and utilizes a worksheet to help clients review their day. Clients share and discuss their strengths and weaknesses for that specific day, and review how their success in following the intention set at morning reflection group.

I went to Shadow Mountain Rehab to address my issues with alcoholism and addiction. After realizing that for years I had been a functional addict I thought quitting or curbing this addiction would be easy but this disease is not so simple. Making the decision to go to Shadow Mountain Recovery in Taos, NM did not come lightly but I did understatement how much personal effort I would be putting in. 30 days doesn't solve everything but it does give you a chance to at least take stock of all that's going on in your life. Drinking and Drugs are just a symptom of something deeper and unique to each individual addressing their issues. This program gave me the tools and support to truly begin the process of addressing addiction, searching within and finding myself. I am 2 months sober now and my journey that began in the mountains of Taos goes on but the journey has definitely been made easier by what I learned in recovery. Sobriety is possible & if you work it guess what, it can work!

Shadow mountain offered the support, wisdom and guidance my son needed and when he asked. My son is back...20 months sober...strong, clear and commited. Big love to all those who loved my son back to health. Jane
