Recognize Whether You Need Help

The first challenge in overcoming a substance use disorder is recognizing that you or a loved one have a problem. Yet it’s often easier said than done. The nature of addiction leads to denial, rationalization, and attempts to minimize the scope of a substance use problem. That’s where the “Am I An Addict?” quiz can be helpful. The simple quiz can tell you whether substance use may be an issue for you, giving you the insight you need to take the next steps in recovery.

How the Quiz Can Help

If you’re wondering if you have an addiction, chances are you already know. But having a simple way to verify what you think you know is helpful and could be just the catalyst you or a loved one needs to get help.

For these reasons, researchers developed brief quizzes to screen people for addiction. These quizzes have been adapted to cover multiple substances.

These quizzes all attempt to answer the same questions:

  • Has your substance use progressed beyond recreational or experimental use?
  • Do you have an active addiction?
  • What steps do you need to take to achieve recovery?

Psychologists have distilled these quizzes down to a science. With the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) and CAGE questionnaire, you can answer just a few questions about your substance use and determine whether you need addiction treatment.

The first evidence-based quiz is the Addiction Severity Index:

The second quiz is known as the CAGE questionnaire:

Recognize Your Struggle

If you’ve received a positive result on the “Am I an Addict?” quiz, you likely have a substance use disorder.

Addiction is a chronic and debilitating disorder with a host of negative effects — but you can recover from it.

Your next step after an addiction quiz is to get a formal diagnosis. You can contact an addiction rehab center to ask for a diagnosis and begin the path to recovery.

Signs and Symptoms of Addiction

While everyone experiences addiction differently, many of the symptoms are shared.

Addiction specialists look for the following signs of a substance use disorder:

  • Tolerance, meaning you need to use more drugs or alcohol than you previously did to achieve the desired effect
  • Cravings, or an invasive desire to return to drug and alcohol use
  • Physical withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop using
  • Multiple failed attempts to cut down or stop on your own
  • Losing interest in hobbies or activities outside of substance use
  • Worsening physical or mental health as a result of substance use
  • Continued substance use despite mounting consequences
  • Problems at work, school, or home due to substance use
  • Risky behavior, such as using drugs or alcohol while driving
  • Spending a great deal of time under the influence of drugs or alcohol, recovering from their effects, or seeking them out
  • Using more substances than intended or for longer than intended

Meeting just two of these criteria can result in a substance use disorder diagnosis, and the presence of six or more indicates a severe problem.

The Impact of Addiction

After a person develops a substance use disorder, they can experience a wide range of harmful consequences. The impact of addiction extends far beyond the individual alone. Addiction also affects families, friends, and entire communities.

Addiction is incredibly difficult to overcome without support. When people with a substance use disorder suddenly stop using, they often face severe physical and mental withdrawal symptoms. These withdrawal symptoms can be dangerous, causing life-threatening side effects in some instances.

Even if someone successfully breaks through the withdrawal stage, they still face unwanted drug cravings and long-lasting mental health effects. All of these can be treated effectively at a substance use treatment center.
